Hyderabad: Commuters in the city were happy with the initiative of Hyderabad police to tie up with Google’s web mapping service to make people aware of the places where traffic was getting jammed in view of the Ganesh immersion procession.

Speaking to DC, additional commissioner (traffic) Anil Kumar said that the intention was to provide information on real-time traffic conditions and route for commuters.

He said the police had signed the memorandum of understanding earlier this month with Google Maps.

Being a Sunday, traffic was comparatively light and the main junctions in and around were highlighted in the maps application for the convenience of the commuters, said the official. The citizens also took to Twitter and social media to praise the initiative.

Arunn Bhagavathula on Twitter posted “Amazed at the way #GoogleMaps is showing tomorrow’s Ganesh nimajjanam route today itself!”

“Since everyone has a smartphone, this was a very nice effort by the officials and we appreciate Google maps to support us”, said a road safety expert, adding that the hoardings had been put up at various junctions several days ago informing the public about the service and how they could use it.
