Hyderabad: A series of efforts, including launch of Myghmc app, online tax payments and other facilities appear to be bearing fruit with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation bagging the top position in transparency, accountability and participation among 21 urban local bodies in the country.

This was disclosed during the Budget through Economic Survey 2016-17 report, which was tabled by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday. Among the 21 cities surveyed in the country, Hyderabad stands top. Apart from transparency and accountability, GHMC ranks first in terms of services offered to the citizens. Pune and Chandigarh were ranked second and third respectively.

When it comes to revenue generation, Hyderabad was ranked second after Pune in the country. Mumbai stands third in the list in this parameter. The Economic Survey 2016-17 based its findings on the Annual Survey of India’s City Systems (ASICS).

This is the third edition of ASICS, which is done by Janagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, an NGO. ASICS was aimed at objective evaluation of Indian cities on the cities framework.

Though Hyderabad fared better in many parameters, the study revealed that it needs to focus on few other aspects. In terms of Urban Planning and Design, it needs to work on Spatial Development Plans (SDP), the city lags behind four cities. The SDP pave way for rural-urban integration and overall development of the city involving fringe areas.
